With the autumn running season approaching, there are a number of opportunities for our junior members to take part in cross country races at both local and national levels.

Please note that to take part as a club member, you need to be a registered with Matlock AC (i.e. subs need to be up to date!) and for larger championship events you will need to be affiliated with the UKA / England Athletics. The club will subsidise the affiliation fee for any junior who wants to compete, but we do need a bit of notice so for pre-entry events we will ask runners to register their intent to run a week or so prior to the official closing date of the competition.

For the larger championship events the wearing of a club vest is mandatory (although you are allowed to wear something underneath…). For the smaller events such as the mini leagues then a club t-shirt will be fine.

For relay events a team selection may need to be made if there are more runners than needed to make up the age group team. The final decision on this will rest with the coaching team and will take into account recent performances on Monday nights.

If you have any questions please come and ask one of the coaches or captains on Monday night – we are all happy to help!

North Midlands League

There are four races in the North Midlands league, and runners who take part in all four fixtures are eligible to compete for the overall age group titles. There is no requirement to run all of the fixtures, and no need to pre-enter.

The organisation of these events is very low key – you will be handed a numbered disc at the finish that indicates your position, and then the assigned team manager notes down the disc numbers and names of the runners in the team and hands the form back in an envelope to the race officials – simple!

  • Saturday 13 th October, Markeaton Park, Derby
  • Saturday 10 th November, Kettering
  • Saturday 1st December, Shipley Park
  • Saturday 12 th January, Wollaton Park, Nottingham

There are five races in the series, always held on Sunday mornings with a mass start for all age groups and genders at 11:00 am.

As for the North Midlands league, you will be handed a numbered disc at the finish, which you then hand to the team manager to note down your name.

  • Sunday 11 th November, Chaddesden
  • Sunday 2nd December, Bakewell

Northern Athletics Championship

No details on this yet, except that is takes place in Pontefract on 26 th January 2019. Further information will be posted later in the year.

English Nationals

The big one, to be held Harewood House, near Leeds on 23rd February 2019. This is a great day out, with the chance to see and race against the best athletes in the country. All runners over the age of 11 on the day of competition will be eligible to compete. Further details on pre-entry and travel arrangements will be released later in the year.

Primary & Year 7 Cross Country Finals.

To be held at Prestwold Hall, Leicester 23rd March 2019. The races will take place using the grounds of Prestwold Hall and every race will be filmed and broadcast across the web on Vinco sports and also beamed back to a large screen at the start/finish area. Distances will range from approximately 1800m for year 5s to around 2500m for year 7 competitors. All the races will be “hared and tortoised” to ensure that everyone that takes part in the event is encouraged and safely seen around the course.Year five and year six races will be combined national finals and Leicestershire/Leicester/Rutland.

This should ensure there will be a great feel about the event as each of these races will total well in excess of 200 competitors. Year seven competitors will have their own races and we estimate that there will be around 100 in each of these events.
