Triathlons have been taking place for a few weeks now following British Triathlon easing restrictions in place throughout the Coronavirus Pandemic.
So MAC family trio – Karl Webster, Christine Howard and Lizzie Webster took advantage to travel to the Lake District for this year’s Helvellyn Tri one of the original and toughest challenge triathlons and in it’s 17th year, taking place in Glenridding. The 1.6km swim is in Ullswater Lake with a 61.2km cycle ride including the infamous Kirkstone Pass at 44km climbing 400m in 5km loaded with 20% ascents and a 14.50km run up and down Helvellyn at 850m it is the 3rd highest peak in England.
Christine was 13th lady in 4 hours 54 mins 21 secs and 3rd LV, Lizzie 15th lady in 4 hours 58 mins 30 secs. An amazing achievement at 17 as it was about 5 times her normal race distance showing lockdown training gains. Lizzie's boyfriend, Xavi Salcedo also took part, also 17. Karl Webster 11th in MV50 in 4 hours 42 mins 39 secs.
This year there was a strong pro field of 24 British athletes taking part including Alistair Brownlee, who won the race. He had a busy weekend competing in two races in two different countries – on Saturday as part of the GB squad in Hamburg where he finished 9th before lining up on Sunday for the Helvellyn tri. Nikki Bartlett was first lady.
The weather was cold, wet and misty testing the athletes to their limit. The race was structured so the men and women raced together with the first past the post being crowned the champion. To make it fair the top women’s wave set of 28 minutes ahead of the top men’s wave.
Christine also took part in the New Forest Middle Distance Triathon (70.2) 2 weeks ago and had a really good race to finish 3rd overall lady on a surprisingly hilly bike course.
