Report from Dan Ashcroft - The Great Northern Run (not to be confused with another race of a similar name) took place on Bank Holiday Monday in favourable, but slightly breezy conditions. There are three races including a 2k family run, 10k & Half Marathon. All three races start and finish near to Mickleover Sports Football Club, who are local rivals to Matlock Town FC. In the 2018-19 season the teams fiercely contested two draws, one of which was described as an ‘awful and scrappy derby’, and the other finished goalless. Fortunately the quality of the running by the MACs was excellent as they came away with silverware in both the 10k and Half Marathon. The 10k takes runners out of Mickleover on gently undulating and winding country lanes before turning onto the former Great Northern Railway Line which leads directly back to start and finish area. The Half Marathon is in essence the same course with an additional out and back spur on the first lap to make up the distance. In the 10k, MAC’s Dan Fletcher claimed a fantastic 2nd overall in a time of 36:08, just 12 seconds behind the winner, Richard Kitchen (unattached). 1st lady was Kelly Butler (unattached) in 38:50, there were 281 runners.
Two MACs competed in the Half Marathon and it was John Thorpe, who stormed to an impressive race victory, tearing through the tape in a new personal best of 1:19:53. Meanwhile, further back was Dan Ashcroft in 19th position in a time of 1:32:48. 1st lady was Nicola Goodacre (Long Eaton Triathlon Club) in 1:28:58, there were 169 runners
