Manchester Marathon

Report from Alaina Bond on Manchester Marathon - On Sunday eight MACs took on Manchester marathon. The weather was cool and calm at the start, the same perhaps couldn’t be said about runners.
The race began near Old Trafford to the sounds of Oasis and the Stone Roses and took in Sale, Altrincham and Urmstone before finishing back at Old Trafford.
First home for MAC was Simon Flitter in 3:23:03. A self confessed lack of training meant that Simon was happy with this time and managed to keep his emotions in check but the steps back to the car park proved much more difficult than first imagined.
Next to the cross the line was John Thorpe in 3:27:43 after doing an excellent job of sticking with and pacing Shelley Fairey (3:27:59) up until the last 200m when he just couldn’t resist a sprint finish. Shelley had a strong run in what was her first and apparently last (we shall see!) marathon.
Next was Jason Armshaw crossing the line in 3:40:49 showing excellent pacing and a strong finish.
Kate O’Connor Parker made light work of the 26.2 miles of Manchester tarmac having a strong run finishing comfortably under the 4 hour mark in 3:55:14.
Next back were Daniel Maskrey (3:59:34) closely followed by Craig Cantrill (3:59:41) running his first marathon both dipping under the four hour mark.
Andy Hodkin completed the race in 5:02:05 having taken the last minute decision to run the race supporting a friend to run a 5 hour marathon.
A fine effort by all who took part. This event and its runners really encompass what running is all about for many people. Supporting each other, each individual story and reasons behind their journey to marathon runner.
The race was won by Aaron Richmon of Bideford AAC (2:21:34) and first female was Jenny Spink of Bristol and West AC in 2:35:19.
There were 13,095 finishers.
