Report from Alison Pye - On a very cold Saturday, 20 MACs made the short journey over to Long Eaton to fly the sky blue flag in the BMAF cross country relay championships. The course was flat, firm underfoot and only 3k, leading to some very quick times and hard running. The ladies got the event underway, with Carly Spear and Penny McCloy toeing the line for first leg, both making their debut in cross country events. Carly had a strong run bring the LV35 home in 18th place, Alison Pye gained two places before handing over to Christine Howard for the final leg who brought the team home in 13th out of 28 in this age category. Vale Royal led from the gun, setting a new course record and fastest leg of the day was recorded by Lisa Palmer-Blount, 10 min 38, missing the course record by 2 seconds. For the LV45 team, Penny finished first leg in 14th place, a position that was maintained by Andrea Joy Priestley before Kathryn Berrisford finished strongly bringing the team home in 12th place. The MV35 team put in a strong performance finishing just outside the top 10 in 11th position. Led off by Dennis Belbin (25th), John Thorpe gained 6 places, Ricky Wood pulled another 4 positions back to 15th, late replacement into the team Ian Philips took the team to 12th, before captain Colin Davenport ran the final leg. Notts AC won the title, with the two fastest legs of the day (9.32 and 9.35) being run by Notts athletes.
Andy Mellor started proceedings for the MV45 team, recording 14th position on first leg. Greg Woodward picked off one place, Geoff Cooper another 3 to take the team into the top 10. Peter Wilmot built on this bringing the team up to 8th overall and this was maintained by Karl Webster on the final leg.
For the MV55 team Andrew Hodkin completed first leg in 9th, on the second leg was John Hurley, followed by Chris Hallam and in the final leg bringing the team home in 10th was John Birch. Some great performances and strong running from everyone in MAC colours. A great event where we successfully held our own against some of the best teams in the country. Massive thank you to Tessa Jackson and Mark Jackson for organising the teams and us all on the day. A great afternoon was had by all competing and supporting each other.
