Andy Mellor reports on Wirksworth Undulator -
13 MACs ventured to Wirksworth to take on the Stuart Learmouth Memorial Undulator. October seems not to have got the memo about it being Autumn, and we were blessed with cloudless skies, meaning that multi-layer Mike might almost have been feeling overdressed for the occasion.
The Undulator is 8.5 miles of – perhaps unsurprisingly – undulation. Climbing steeply out of Wirksworth it’s a seemingly endless grind up to the trig point on Harborough Rocks. No time to enjoy the views, before the steep descent down to the High Peak Trail. Runners are treated to fantastic views of Carsington before a ‘sting in the tail’ ascent which the legs no longer find funny. The race has a nice final stretch though, with a fairly lengthy descent to the finish and plenty of opportunity to gain or lose a few vital places.
For MAC, first home in second place was Billy Cartwright, with Mike Blair in 13th overall – lucky for some. Bob Foreman also had a stonking run, finishing in 34th place, with Mark Pollak and Scott Thompson bagging top 50 spots.
Other MAC finishers included Alan Pickering (56th), Andy Mellor (62nd), Jason Turner (64th), Jack Cummins (71st), Mick Moorhouse (92nd), Emma Turner (98th), Kathryn Berrisford (150th) and Sally Owen (176th). There were 191 runners overall.
The race was won by Harry Holmes, seemingly not tired from the small matter of a little fell race the previous day and smashing his own course record. Third place was Dan Haworth, so effectively a MAC 1, 2, 3 taking account of our second claim runners. Mopping up the age category runs, Mike Blair picked up the V40 win, with Bob Foreman mopping up the V60 category. Emma was 3rd V40 lady.
A really well organised race from Wirksworth Running Club – and so nice that after last year they have sorted the weather out.
