MACs Andy Hall started on Friday evening at 6.00pm, in the 11th running of the Ultra Tour of The Lake District 100 miles – the circular route encompasses the whole of the Lakeland fells and includes approximately 6,300 m of ascent and consists almost entirely of public bridleways and footpaths; starting in Coniston and heads south before completing a loop which takes in the Dunnderdale Fells, Eskdale, Wasdale and Buttermere before returning to Coniston via Kentmere, Ambleside and Elterwater.
Competitors are expected to finish within 40 hours. There is generally a 50-60% failure rate as competitors need to navigate tricky terrain in darkness. Andy completed 9 checkpoints but had to withdraw at Howtown Bobbin Mill after going for over 18 hours, but not to be deterred he has vowed to return for next year! That's the spirit!!
