Report from Bob Foreman -
On The Longest Day 292 runners and a film crew, complete with a drone, gathered on the village playing fields for the annual Grindleford Fell Race which is 4.5miles and 800 feet. The course is basically three sections which is roughly 1.5 miles uphill through woodland, I mile lovely flattish running through Longshaw and 2 miles eyeballs out down Padley Gorge and across fields before a quick wash of the shoes in the River Derwent and back into the playing fields.
The first runner home was Lee Kemp of Totley in 32.16 and the first lady was Caroline Brock of Steel City Striders, 14th O/A in 36.49.
For MAC John Thorpe had a great run finishing 10th in 36.05, Bob Foreman 25th and 3rd MV50 in 38.11, Pete Wilmot 41st in 39.28, Mark Pollock 58th in 40.38, Geoff Cooper 61st in 40.56, Jack Cummins 72nd in 42.32 and finally Les Thurston taking it steady after injury 244th in 58.08.
A glorious evening for a fell race and a bit of gentlemanly conduct thrown in by John Thorpe who stopped and gave assistance to 1st lady Caroline Brock who had taken a tumble in front of him but not gentlemanly enough to stop him overtaking her and finishing 4 places ahead.
It is a race after all!
The usual summer evening midges were very hungry so the MAC contingent retired to the Sir William, where the hospitality was no doubt not as good as that enjoyed by those at Parwich courtesy of Clive, but the pint of Green Kings Bo66y went down a treat.
Just a reminder to make the most of these light evenings as the nights are drawing in!
