On Saturday, 4 MACs (Karl Webster, Chris Hallas, Charlie Whittaker and Christine Howard) really pushed themselves taking part in the Triathlon X Ironman in Ambleside; the World’s toughest Ironman. The 2.4 mile Lake Windermere swim was over 2 laps from Waterhead, Ambleside to Brathay Rocks. Then came the 112 mile Fred Whitton Cycle Route with elevation of 12,000 ft, taking in the Kirkstone Pass, Honister Pass, Whinlatter Pass, Hardknott Pass and Wrynose Pass. Then the full 26.2 mile marathon run with elevation of 4,923 ft, the route taking in the Great Langdale Valley to the Langdale Pikes and summit of Scafell Pike and back.
Karl Webster reports – It was a long and grim day out as it rained almost non-stop and made for a very cold bike section. The course had to be slightly altered because of a fallen tree which added a bit to the bike leg, but the organisers knocked a bit off the run section on the tops around Scafell Pike because the weather made the visibility so poor.
On reflection I think we enjoyed it, especially the bit between arriving back in Ambleside and crossing the finishing line!! Loads dropped out, but not the MACs, who finished as the 2nd team. The winner was Nicholas Michalski of Micha in 13 hours 36 minutes 59 seconds. 1st lady was Corinne Clark of Velo Vitesse in 13 hours 56 minutes 54 seconds. Karl Webster was 22nd in 15 hours 21 minutes 44 seconds, Chris Hallas 28th in 15 hours 48 minutes 59 seconds, Charlie Whittaker 29th in 15 hours 50 minutes 28 seconds and Chris Howard 4th lady overall and 1st LV40 in 16 hours 16 minutes and 38 seconds. (There has been an issue with the timings). There were 87 finishers
