On Saturday 17th March it was the 21 mile Grindleford Gallop, which was made even more challenging by the snow and bitingly cold wind. The route takes in 3,000 ft of ascent and the villages of Grindleford, Frogatt, Eyam, Great Longstone, Edensor and Baslow linking them together with paths, tracks and open moorland of the White Peak. Famous landmarks on the way round include Longstone Moor, The Monsal Trail and Chatsworth Estate. The final high-level section traverses Baslow and Frogatt edge.
MACs Scott Thompson reports - Ten brave MACs took part in very wet and heavy conditions for the section up to Longstone Moor which gave way to frozen conditions and a blizzard on the descent from Longstone.
Competitors were then hit with very wet, heavy conditions over to Chatsworth made worse by a 40mph headwind all the way to Baslow.
Then once on the return leg along the edges to Grindleford a blizzard set in with wind chill at approximately minus 10-12.
After a couple of miles in those conditions at that distance it was nothing more than a grim slog for the finish. The descent through the woods to Grindleford was made worse by a good covering of snow.
The winner was Dan Haworth in 2.31.53 2nd claim MAC runner and nearly seven minutes ahead of the 2nd place runner James Rose. 1st lady was Caroline Brock in 2.56.44. 1st MAC home was Rupert Holden 1st MV50 in 3.04.10, followed by Simon Croft 3.07.28 2nd MV50, Scott Thompson 3.27.47, Kelly Lynn 3.31.38, John Thorpe 3.31.40, Christine Howard 3.35.57, Martin Lea 3.45.10, David Clough 3.46.52, Mark Pollak 4.03.21. There were 351 finishers.

The 30th Grizzly took place on Sunday. A 20ish mile, notoriously difficult race with over 3,000 ft of ascent with two sections of beach, two energy-sapping bogs and the “Stairway to Heaven” steep path up the side of the cliff. However, due to the weather conditions the organisers cut the route short to just under 10 miles.
MACs MV65 Les Thurston too part and completed in 1-36-39. 428th out of 1266 finishers. The winner was David Green of Northampton Road Runners in 1-01-08 and first lady was Kirsteen Welch in 1-13-40.

There were 86 runners.

From road races to fell races to duathlons to aquathlons, there were many postponements and cancellations again at the weekend due to the snowy and icy weather conditions, although the Active Forest Sherwood Pines 7k Night Run, postponed from 3rd March because of the snowy conditions, did manage to go ahead, because of the travel conditions runners from the Matlock area were unable to get there.
