Report from Colin Davenport, Club Captain
"For the first time in a number of years, Matlock AC runners made the trip up to Harewood House near Leeds to compete in the Northern Area Association Cross Country Championships. This competition welcomes runners from all across the North of England, and gives athletes a chance to try their hand against a larger field of runners than is normally the case in our local leagues.

This was the first time such an event has been held at Harewood, and the course was a great test for cross country running – firm underfoot at the start of the day for the juniors, before breaking down into something slightly more energy sapping once the heavyweights of the senior women’s and men’s fields had given it a good thrashing.

First up for Matlock was Lucy Kuszinski in the 3km under 13s race, finishing 203rd out of 235 and still smiling at the end. County champion Lizzie Webster and team mate Michaela Dick then threw themselves into the under 15s race, with both girls putting strong performances in and finishing 32nd and 108th respectively in a field of 186.

Matlock stalwart Nicky Dick was the sole entrant for the senior women’s race. A sterling effort though on a rapidly degenerating course that saw her claim 257th place out of 435 runners.

In the Senior Men's race, Carl Dyke, Patrick Wright, John Thorpe and Colin Davenport all took up the challenge. In a large turnout of competitors, the men were evenly spread through the field of 761. Paddy, John and Carl all worked hard for placings of 243rd, 318th and 417th respectively, with Colin managing 128th in the final reckoning. 1st place went to Carl Avery of Morpeth Harriers in 39.50.

No team eligibility this time around, but at least we got some runners there this year. So hoping for a bigger MAC squad next year!
